JOHN MEHRMANN — PIANO, PERCUSSION, COMPOSITION

John Mehrmann has composed music for the Bangor Symphony, the Portland Symphony’s Kinderkonzerts, movies, commercials, and dozens of choral works. His score for the 2020 film Honeydew has been called “one of the best film scores of the year” (Movies in Focus) and “an outstanding music score” (British film critic Kim Newman). His orchestral work has been described as “lyric, poignant and, at times, very noble” by Grammy-winning conductor Lucas Richman. In addition to his work as a composer, he is music director and organist at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Auburn, ME, where he plays a newly installed 1954 Casavant Opus 2277 Pipe Organ. He is also a section percussionist with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. He has a particular interest in singing and conducting Renaissance and Medieval choral music and served for several years as Music Director of VoXX: Voice of Twenty. In addition to his work at Bay Chamber, he teaches composition, piano, percussion, voice and accordion at the University of Maine at Augusta and has taught music theory at Colby College. John received his MM in Composition from the New England Conservatory. At Bay Chamber, he loves helping students of all ages discover and rediscover their own unique creative voices.
